Update, sat next to “grandma” on bus

Read time: 2 minutes

Hopped on the bus yesterday and sat down and only then did I realize it was that sweet Grandma smell again (see previous post). I was sitting right next to her this time. I had the same reaction as the first time and it was another wonderful moment…

But of course I had to ruin it with some good old fashioned awkwardness. First, some background.

I always travel with a backpack with the essentials: iPod, earphones, jacket, umbrella, food, bag full of emergency computer maintenance stuff (crossover cable anyone?); all the usual Auckland stuff (you have to be prepared for anything here, be it a spontaneous beach excursion or torrential downpour).

So as part of getting situated in the seat next to “Grandma” I had to put my cell phone back in my left-front pants pocket.

Lean to the right, put cell phone in the pocket (she was on my left) and oops, I think I just accidentally touched her leg. Jeez. Nice going Nathaniel. Before I even turned to look I could feel her look over at me as if to say, “um, excuse me?”

Groan.

Ever tried to say sorry with headphones on? It’s not very effective because you can’t hear what the other person’s saying and the whole interaction is just muffled and one-sided. Hopefully my “murmumffzurry” came across and smoothed over the situation. Probably not.

I just have to laugh at this sequence of events. Not only because I have a flair for the dramatic in my own mind (oh the ups and downs of being a creative type) but that I also have a flair for the absurd in real life; I am a social klutz at very inopportune moments.

So, sorry Grandma-on-the-bus-lady, I’m a complete klutz when I sit down on the bus and I didn’t mean to touch you there. Oh man, even writing it is bloody awkward. I’ll just sign off and hope this all blows over.

Okay, forget I posted this please. Please?
